BENKHARD, Ágost

Painter. He began his studies at the Budapest School of Design and at the Arts Teacher Training College as a student of Tivadar Zemplényi. He continued his education in Nagybánya (Baia-mare, Romania) under the guidance of Simon Hollósy and completed it with the help of Ferenc Szablya-Frischauf in Budapest. In 1904 he made a study trip to Rome. In 1905 he made his first public appearance at the Budapest Art Gallery. In 1907 he was one of the founders of Association of Hungarian Artists and Applied Artists (KÉVE), and became the president of the same later. He became a teacher of the Budapest School of Industrial Drawing and, from 1922, of the Academy of Fine Arts. He was the Rector of the latter institution between 1935 and 1937. He organised the Miskolc State Colony of Artists and headed it until 1939. He participated in a number of national and foreign exhibitions mainly with his landscape pictures. He was decorated with the gold medal in Barcelona in 1929 and in Budapest in 1943. His style throughout remained faithful to the plein air naturalism of Nagybánya. His works are kept in the Hungarian National Gallery, the Museum of Modern History and the Museum of Miskolc.
