BEBO, Károly
(c. 1712, ? - 1779, Óbuda)

Károly Bebo, a sculptor, a foreman builder and a steward in the service of the Counts Zichy, appeared in 1740 at their Óbuda estate as a well-educated, versatile artist. We have no earlier data concerning him, and we can only suppose him to have come from Italy. Primarily he worked as a Rococo decorator, full of fresh ideas. As a sculptor, he was master of wood and stone carving as well as of stucco work. Among his surviving works the most outstanding are the white and gold pulpit of Székesfehérvár's Jesuit church (1749), the whole wood furnishing of Óbuda parish church (1748-52), several altars of Kiscell's Trinitarian church (1759-62) and the high altar of St. Anne's church in Buda with its monumental stucco figures of the dramatic scene of The Presentation of Mary in the Temple, from 1771.
